Beyond the Diamond’s Beauty
Best known as precious stones and objects of adornment, the diamond demonstrates its versatility in its other productive uses. The diamond is an ideal industrial tool because it is the hardest natural substance known. It has remarkable resistance to being scratched, thus only a diamond can scratch another diamond.
The inferior varieties of diamond called bort and carbonado are widely used for industrial purposes. Industrial diamonds that are crushed into powder or grit are used in making grinding wheels and disks to sharpen tungsten carbide tools. It can also be used for shaping quartz, ceramic and glass articles.
Diamonds are also used in diamond drills which are basically hollow cylinders that have diamonds mounted in their rims. The diamond drill is widely used in exploring for mineral deposits, testing concrete dam, bridge and building foundations as well as drilling oil wells. A diamond is truly an object of beauty and strength.
