The Nano Car 0

The world’s first single-molecule vehicle has been built using nano-technology. It has a chassis, pivoting axles and rotating wheels. Measuring about three to four nanometers across, it is slightly wider than a strand of DNA. The synthesis and testing of nanocars and other molecular machines are expected to provide critical insights in the investigations of bottom-up molecular manufacturing.

Man would eventually need to move objects and do work in a controlled fashion on the molecular scale and a nanocar is a great test bed for that. It is capable of rolling on its wheels in a direction of right angles to its axles. When tested on a gold surface at room temperature, strong electrical bonds held the wheels tightly against the gold but heating to about 200C enabled them to roll.

Attaining the Virtual Surround Sound 0

A typical home-theater set-up provides the surround-sound effect with its speakers and subwoofers. However, a considerable amount of space is needed for all the equipment, not to mention the clutter of cables. There is also the hassle of adjusting the placement and height of a number of speakers.

The virtual surround sound presents an acceptable alternative when the effects of a multi-speaker surround system is mimicked using fewer speakers and cables. The system uses a number of techniques to modify sound waves so that they seem to come from more speakers than those that are really there. The techniques are lifted from the study of psychoacoustics or the manner by which people perceive sound.

Check 21 0

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, also known as Check 21 allows a paper check to be converted into an electronic image in a process called check truncation. Electronic check exchange reduces costs associated with sorting, transporting and reconciling of paper checks as the conversion may occur at any time during the life cycle of a check.

A process of check truncation replaces the paper check with an electronic image containing essential information from the original check. When a store deposits a check that has been paid to it to its bank, the check’s information can be processed electronically, after which the information can be sent to the Federal Reserve, likewise electronically for processing. In effect, the store’s account will be credited while debiting the account of the check issuer.

Sober College 0

We have featured a number of drug and alcohol rehab centers on this blog in the past, but the addiction treatment center I am about to introduce is really unique. You see, Sober College takes a different approach to drug and alcohol rehabilitation. They don’t just consider their mission to allow people to overcome their addiction, they consider it their mission to give people the tools to get their life back on track in all aspects. The center accepts young adults (17-26) and provides a positive and sober environment supplemented by substance abuse treatment. Sober College works on Life Skills, Physical Fitness, Academics, and Job Readiness among their patients and works with each individual towards a sober and successful future.

Robotic Facial Massages 0

The WAO-1 robot developed in Japan was initially deployed to provide facial massages to patients with jaw-related medical problems as part of their treatment. It was intentionally done to deliver more refined massages than those offered by electric massage chairs because the facial bone structure is much more fragile than the back or spine bones.

It will only become available in hospitals or to the public once its use is approved by a government safety panel. The robot can reportedly be adjusted to give beauty and relaxation massages. This is not actually a long shot since robots that give shampoos in hair salons are widely deployed in Japan.

Family Entertainment 0

Parents may have some good reasons for resisting their children’s request for a game console but it may be harder to resist once it is packaged as a family entertainment. The connotation of family being as it is – safety, clean fun and enjoyment, the usual hard no may just be converted to a softer maybe.

The manufacturers’ move of rebundling and remarketing their products for the family market are of course driven by their desire to capture a larger share of the market. Family versions are being presented in such a way that would appeal to the casual market. Whether or not the casual market can afford it is an altogether different question.
