It’s Going Down

August 20th, 2008

Could it be? Could it really be? That is what I kept on asking myself when I read an article recently about the decrease in cell phone consumers in the United States. It seems that the average age for a cell phone holder is getting younger and younger, and that many people have more than just one cell phone, so it took me by surprise to read that United States consumers have been buying considerably less cell phones. However, just because people are buying fewer phones does not mean that they are spending less money. There may be a decrease in sales but there is an increase in the fancier and more expensive phones that are being sold.

The Lifespan of a PC

August 17th, 2008

Do you need to change your PC because of its age even if it’s working fine? The answer is not necessarily but eventually you will. The hard drive, optical drive, power supply or mother board will eventually fail. This can cause a wide range of minor annoyances or catastrophic disasters depending on the condition of the computer.

New supplies often don’t fit with old models. It can be very difficult to find compatible equipment and adapter cables. Even if you do find one, it can be very challenging to mount them properly which might lead you to rethink whether it’s worth the trouble at all. New software, maximized upgrades, new features compatibility and extreme gaming demands will sooner or later convince you to change your good old PC.

Working Globally

August 15th, 2008

The internet has surely made the world a smaller place. It is possible to work anywhere in the world. You can use what’s called a virtual desktop to make sure you have access to the same software and files you have back home. But even in this digital age we tend to get quite a lot of physical mail which can be quite a hassle for the frequent traveler. That’s what’s so great about the Mail Forwarding service offered by BMP. Not only can you have your mail forwarded to your location oversees, you can even have it scanned to view online for quick and easy access to time sensitive documents.

IMAP and Web-based E-mail

August 15th, 2008

The basic idea with IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) remains the same as that of POP e-mail’s. Messages which are sent and received are first stored in your server until they are downloaded onto specific computers using e-mail client programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Netscape Messenger, and the like.

The main difference between IMAP and POP is that one can manipulate messages from different computers with IMAP. So for example, you have a desktop at work, a laptop you carry around, and a desktop at home. With IMAP, you can access your e-mail messages from any of these three computers without having to transfer them from one computer to the other. This is in fact a big improvement because with POP, once you download the messages to one computer, they are taken off the server. As such, you would have to physically transfer your e-mails from your desktop to your laptop for example.

Before we end, let’s briefly mention web-based e-mails. These are normally the free accounts although with both POP and IMAP, web hosts can provide access through the web. This is an attractive idea for those on the go. With this feature, you have more versatility.

Renewable Energy

August 14th, 2008

Adding a renewable energy system to one’s home or business may entail high initial costs but may be the biggest step anyone can take on lowering environmental impact. The high cost anyway is likely to be offsetted by savings or utility costs over the long term. Government has also been offering incentives that can shorten the time necessary to offset the cost of such technology. Once the system is in place, it produces virtually free energy.

The renewable energy system may not be appropriate for everyone since there are certain factors that need to be considered such as the availability of net metering in an area, the types of technologies that will work best in a specific location and the financial options available.

Fireworks Hoax

August 14th, 2008

There have been many impressive presentations at the Beijing opening ceremony for the Olympics including a waterfall show and a spectacular fireworks event. However, it turns out that some of the footage shown of the fireworks was pre-recorded. There were giant footsteps going into the Beijing skyline and apparently these were pre-recorded and broadcasted on TV. Most people could not tell though.
